Flip Flops have been worn by people of many cultures throughout the world.
They originate as far back as the ancient Egyptians - around 4,000 B.C at least. The modern flip-flop actually descends from the Japanese zōri, which became popular after World War II when soldiers returning to the United States brought them back home with them.
They became popular in casual settings during the 1960s, 1990s, and 2000s, and some varieties have even found their way into more formal attire (despite criticism!).
They have been known as many names too; such as the thong sandal or in India and Pakistan, flip-flops are commonly known as hawai chappal (हवा चप्पल), which literally translates from Hindi-Urdu as air sandal.
Thong sandals have been worn for thousands of years, we can even date them back to pictures in ancient Egyptian murals from 4,000 B.C.
One pair found in Europe was made of papyrus leaves and dated to be approximately 1,500 years old! They were also worn in Jerusalem during the time of Jesus Christ. These early versions of flip-flops were made from a wide variety of materials. Egyptian sandals were made from papyrus and palm leaves. The Masai of Africa made them out of rawhide. In India, they were made from wood and in China and Japan, rice straw was used.
The Ancient Greeks and Romans wore versions of flip-flops as well. In Greek sandals, the toe strap was worn between the first and second toes, while Roman sandals had the strap between the second and third toes. The modern flip-flop has a very simple design, consisting of a thin rubber sole with two straps running in a Y shape from the sides of the foot to the gap between the big toe and the one beside it.
So the humble flip flop is universally worn throughout the world and it has been around since the year dot. Who knows, they may have even been worn by Jesus and his disciples at the Last Supper!

Looking for some comfortable flip flops? Then you have come to the right place!
Roks original beachwear is designed exclusively in Cornwall, England and they would be my choice for #1 flip flop.
Their classic flip flops are ideal for your holiday, just walking around town or of course on the beach! I do live in Cornwall myself though, so maybe I am slightly biased - but in saying that, surely Cornwall is the best place for a super flip flop to be invented!
Each design (there are four) of these excellent Roks flip flops is strongly influenced by Cornwall’s dramatic coastline and stunning environment. They are even named after a particular beach, town or village that inspired it’s design!
Roks apparently spent over a year working closely with highly experienced product development technicians and this shows as they have selected some of the softest & most comfortable materials available - Roks flip flops really do pass the ‘squidge’ test!
They are a family-run business whose aim is to provide products of superior quality and comfort.
Well.....if ever a pair of flip flops hugged your feet, it is these!!
They have a very soft, rubber strap and a squidgy soft (and very comfy) rubber-based sole. This is what sets them apart from cheaper brands.
